Tenby take sweet revenge

Tenby United 35 Newcastle emlyn 21

Second-half tries from powerful centres Mark Heywood and Tom Dennis saw Tenby United fend off a strong challenge by a determined Newcastle Emlyn side.

They started superbly and were good value for a ten-point lead as they looked likely to emulate their 38-12 home success against the Seasiders.

But Neil Machin's boys clawed their way back to 18-all at the break and the teams were still locked on 21-apiece before Heywood showed his strength with a typically barn-storming run through the middle and Dennis rounded off a good move initiated by halves Neil Duffy and Arthur Maulio-Morgino. Both late tries were converted by winger James Davies to set the seal on a deserved fourth win of the season for a Tenby side which is beginning to return to full strength.

Yet a home win seemed unlikely as Emlyn started in style, creating possession up front for their backs to use.

Their early points came from a Rhydian Harries penalty after the young fly half had hit the post with a previous effort - and Harries also converted a try by Kevin James, the centre crossing at the posts.

But the homesters held on well and bounced back with a try by outside half Arthur Maulio-Morgino but Emlyn added an unconverted try from hooker Bedwyr Davies at a driving maul.

Tenby responded with a try  from Randall Watkins after the winger had been worked into space from a quick pick-up by No 8 Sam Smith and a blind-side snipe by Duffy which Davies converted to go with a penalty that made the score 15-all. Davies and Harries also exchanged further penalties to keep matters tied up at the break.

Davies again swapped penalties at the start of the second period but it was Tenby who stayed the pace with some rousing play by Lee Tucker, Smith, Jesse James and skipper and man of the match Harry Bolton.

They were ably supported by Stuart Tyrie and teenage prop Jeff Martin when they joined the action while Gareth Edwards and Wyndham Williams also worked hard and their tries from centres Heywood and Dennis were just reward for another step up in performance.

Tenby United: Llewellyn Rose; James Davies; Tom Dennis; Mark Heywood; Randall Watkins; Arthur Maulio-Morgino; Neil Duffy; Lee Tucker; Mike Lewis; Mark Badham: Wyndham Williams; Gareth Edwards: Steve James; Harry Bolton (Capt); Sam Smith. Replacements: Nicky Guymer; Stuart Tyrie; Neil Powling; Jeff Martin.
