MR N. K. CAYFORD HAVERFORDWEST The death occurred on February 26th at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, of Mr Norman Keri Cayford, of New Road, Haverfordwest, aged 77. A native of Ferndale, Norman undertook a barber apprenticeship in Carmarthen and once qualified, came to Haverfordwest, where he owned his own shops in Dew Street and at the Old Bridge before retiring to New Road. His interests were sports, including watching and playing snooker, watching horse racing and cricket and he was a very keen fisherman. Family left to mourn are: Fleur (daughter); Nigel (son-in-law); George (grandson); Eve (granddaughter); Nick (son); Linda (daughter-in-law). The funeral took place on Tuesday, March 7th at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth and was conducted by Canon Geoffrey Gwyther. Principal mourners were: Fleur and Nigel Pritchard, Nick and Linda Cayford, and many friends and customers. There was family flowers only. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glyn Thomas and Son, Freystrop.
MRS I. S. REES LETTERSTON (formerly of Llanreithan Mill) Mrs Iris Rees of St Davids Road, Letterston, died on Sunday, February 26th after a short stay at Withybush Hospital. She was 79. A native of Solva, Iris had been a widow for more than 14 years and moved to Letterston following her husband William's death. She and her husband had farmed at Llanreithan Mill, Mathry for 34 years. They were both members at Felinganol Baptist chapel, near Solva. The funeral took place on Thursday, March 2nd at Felinganol Baptist chapel followed by interment at Felinganol Cemetery. The service was conducted by Aled Jenkins and the organist was Hurst Hughes. The bearers were Eric George, Glyn Harries, Phill Jones and Gwyn Harries. Principal mourners were: Terry and Beryl (son and daughter-in-law); Meryl and Leslie (daughter and son-in-law); Helen and Simon, Rachel and Jonathan (granddaughters and husbands); Gareth and Hannah (grandson and fiancé); Sian and Jonathan (granddaughter and boyfriend); Niamh (great granddaughter); Ivor and Jennifer Morgan (brother and sister-in-law); Joyce Morgan (sister-in-law); and numerous nephews, nieces and friends. Unable to attend were: Faith and Cecil Griffiths (sister-in-law and husband). There were family flowers only. Donations in lieu for Tenovus Cancer Charity, to David Price, Hafan, Croesgoch, Haverfordwest. The funeral arrangements were carried out by David Price of Croesgoch.
MR L J. THOMAS MILFORD HAVEN The death occurred on Wednesday March 8th of Mr. Leslie Thomas. He was 89. He was the husband of Vera Thomas, both former teachers at Milford Haven Grammar School. Born one of seven children of a farmer, he was brought up at Bangeston near Pembroke Dock. Whilst always a farmer at heart, he pursued his second love of handicraft and went away to Exeter to train as a secondary school teacher. In his early years in particular he was a very keen sportsman, playing footballfor the college and village cricket back in Pembrokeshire. When time permitted he would be found working on the family farm. At the onset of the Second World War he volunteered for the Army and after a short period of training was promoted to Captain in the Royal Artillery from where he was posted overseas to join the Eighth Army in North Africa. He was involved in the battle of Monte Casino, where he was awarded the Military Cross for outstanding gallantry in the field. He remained in Italy until the end of the war and spent several months at the Army School of Education in Perugia, before returning to England and taking up his first teaching post at Plymouth. He returned to Pembrokeshire in 1947 to take up a post at Milford Haven Grammar School as head of craft which he taught for more than 30 years, culminating his career as Deputy Headmaster by the time he retired in 1980. He will be fondly remembered by generations of children for his gentle but professional manner and for his nick name `Long Tom' - due to his height. In 1949 he married his wife Vera, who was a domestic science teacher at the school and together they enjoyed a long working career and in later years their retirement together pursuing their love for travel and Italy in particular and the growing up of their family. After Vera died in 1994, he continued to enjoy a full and active life. He leaves to mourn his daughter and son Hilary and Richard and grandchildren Sian, Rhian, James and Sarah, his nieces and nephews and friends and in particular his very close friends John and Glynis Richards. The funeral service took place at St Katherine's and St Peter's Church, Milford Haven, on Tuesday March 14th, followed by cremation at Narberth. There were family flowers only with donations to the British Heart Foundation, to Lloyds Bank, Hamilton Terrace, Milford Haven. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing & Sons Limited, Milford Haven.
MRS F. S. DOUGLAS MILFORD HAVEN The death occurred on February 28th at ward ten, Withybush Hospital of Mrs Florence Sylvia Douglas, (known as Sylvia), of Mount Pleasant Way, Milford Haven. She was aged 75. Mrs Douglas, nee Hearne, was born in Hubberston and worked in Milford Post Office as a Telegraphist. She retired in 1963 before the birth of her first child. Sylvia loved her home and family and stayed at home to bring up her two children, Janet and Ian. She enjoyed her garden and knitting for the children and grandchildren. She played the organ at the church in Hubberston in her younger years. She also enjoyed dancing, travelling and amateur dramatics. She is survived by her husband John Douglas. Family left to mourn are John Douglas (husband); Ian and Marie Douglas (son and daughter-in-law); Jack Douglas (grandson); Janet and Robert Treschi (daughter and son-in-law); her sister Emily and brother-in-law Dick Forrest, niece and nephews Ann, Robert and John, along with their spouses Paul, Jane and Georgette. The funeral took place at St David's Church, Hubberston on Monday, March 6th followed by interment at Milford Cemetery. Rev Alan Chadwick officiated at the service. The bearers were Ian (son), Robert and John Forrest (nephews) and Robert Treschi (son-in-law). Principal mourners were the family members named above and friends including neighbours; brothers-in-law David Douglas and Kenny Douglas and former colleagues from the Post Office. There were family flowers only with donations to ward ten, Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest. Tom Newing and Sons, Limited, Milford Haven and Neyland Funeral Services, Hamilton Court Funeral Home, Dartmouth Street, Milford Haven, carried out the funeral arrangements.
MRS M. J. DUNN ST. BRIDES The death occurred at home on February 28th, of Muriel Joan Dunn of Cranford, St Brides, aged 84. Joan was born in Cheshire and spent her early years on the family farm at Hobbs Hill. She met her husband Frank through the Young Farmers Club and they married in 1951 and moved to Broad Oak Farm, High Legh where their children Rosemary and Peter were raised. In 1971 she moved with Frank to Pembrokeshire to take over the Coppercoins at St Ishmaels. During the next few years they extended the club and developed a restaurant which Joan ran. The pub became a popular venue drawing in people from miles around. Joan and Frank then moved to the former Rectory at St Brides in 1978 which they renamed Cranford. Joan and Frank took an active part in the renovation and care of St Brides Church and the area around the beach. Joan took a keen interest in the progress of the renovation work of the Pumphouse at St Brides. Joan devoted herself to the care of Frank and her family. The funeral took place at St Brides Church on March 3rd. Rev Dennis Wight officiated, with a reading by Rev Peter Davies, the former rector of St Brides. The bearers were William Richards, Geoffey Lewis, Peter Evans and Andrew Matthias. Principal mourners were Frank Dunn, Peter Dunn (son), Rosemary and Jeff Kidd (daughter and son-in-law), Fiona Kidd (granddaughter), her partner Alan McIlroy and Caroline Kidd (granddaughter). Other mourners included many residents from the St Brides area and the Friends of the Pembrokeshire National Park. There were family flowers and wreaths from the St Brides Church and St Brides Castle. Donations in lieu of flowers for St Brides Church. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Tom Newing and Sons Ltd, Milford Haven.
Mrs E Noble Flint, (formerly of Milford Haven) The death occurred at her home, 31 Northop Road, Flint, on March 3rd of Mrs Edna Noble (nee Best). Mrs Noble, formerly of Milford Haven, was the beloved wife of John, and dearly loved mother of Mathew. The funeral took place at Flint Parish Church on March 9th. Edna will be fondly remembered by relatives and friends in the Milford Haven area.
Mr j. V. Griffiths formerly of Neyland THE funeral has taken place of Mr John Vernon Griffiths, formerly of Harbour Close, Neyland, who died on March 3rd. The funeral took place on Friday March 10th. He was the husband of the late Eira, father of Trevor, father in law of Kay, grandfather of David and Jenny, and brother-in-law to Beryl and and friend to Ina Williams. The funeral arrangements were carried out by D. J. Evans Forse and Co., Whitchurch, Cardiff.
MRS E. R. GRIFFITHS PEMBROKE DOCK The death occurred on February 19th, at Apley Lodge, Dimond Street, of Mrs Elsie R. Griffiths, formerly of Greenhill Road, Pennar, Pembroke Dock. She was 85. Elsie was a housewife and her main interests were the family, knitting and gardening. She was a member of Gilgal Baptist chapel, Pennar. The funeral took place on February 24th at Gilgal, followed by interment at Llanion Cemetery and was conducted by John Davies. Bearers were Robert and David Marshall (grandsons), Kevin Bowers and Jason Beynon (nephews). Principal mourners were: Betty and Bill Elliott, Sheila Beare, Valerie and Peter Marshall (daughters and sons-in-law); Susan and Paul Morgan, Julie and David Griffiths, Lynne and Simon Bourne (granddaughters and husbands); Robert and Shirley Marshall, Ian and Lesley Beare, David and Sarah Marshall (grandsons and wives); 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. There were family flowers only, with donations to Apley Lodge. The funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son, funeral directors.
MR A. D. CLARK PEMBROKE The death occurred on February 7th at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, of Mr Albert Douglas Clark, of St Ann's Crescent, The Green, Pembroke, aged 82. Mr Clark served in the REME from 1942 to 1946, being stationed at Egypt and Israel during the Second World War. He worked as a HGV driver for Pembrokeshire County Council. His main interests were gardening, listening to opera, driving and visiting DIY stores. Family left to mourn are: Mary (wife); Carol, Christine, Paul and David (sons and daughters); Clare, Martin, Jason, and Amanda (grandsons and granddaughters). The funeral took place on February 14th at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth and was conducted by Roger Jones. Principal mourners were: Mary (wife); Carol, Christine, Paul and David (sons and daughters); Clare, Martin, Jason and Amanda (grandsons and granddaughters). The funeral arrangements were carried out by John Roberts and Son, Pembroke Dock.
MR R. J. BROWN HAVERFORDWEST The funeral took place on Thursday, March 2nd at Parc Gwyn Crematorium of Roy Brown, New Road, Haverfordwest, who died at his home on February 24th aged 85. Rev Alan Vaughan officiated and Roy's ashes were interred later that day in City Road Cemetery. Family left to mourn are: Nellie (wife); Rita and Tom (daughter and son-in-law); Gareth and Pam (son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren); Deborah, Mark, Bethan and Elin (granddaughter, husband and great granddaughters); Rachel and Uwe (granddaughter and husband); Arthur (brother). There were family flowers only with donations in lieu to The British Heart Foundation. Unable to attend the funeral were Deborah and family in New Zealand and Arthur in the USA. Roy Folland and Son carried out the funeral arrangements.
MR V. M. JAMES CRUNDALE The death occurred on Friday, February 24th at Withybush Hospital, of Mr Vincent James, of Woodholm Close, Crundale. He was 82. Vince moved to Hayog Farm, Ambleston at an early age and farmed there with his wife until their retirement when they moved to Crundale. He was a devoted husband and enjoyed the company of his friends and family as well as being a keen and respected gardener. The funeral took place on Friday, March 3rd at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth. Father Owen McGreal officiated. The bearers were Myrddin Bowen, Michael Harries, David Lewis and Robert Moffat (neighbours). Family left to mourn are: Evelyn (wife); Dylwyn James (brother); Gareth and Annette, Richard and Anne, Michael and Claire, Steven and Rhys (nephews and nieces); John, Ken and Christine, Maisie, Margaret and Ernie, Dorothy and Jeff (brothers and sisters-in-law); along with other nephews, nieces and cousins too numerous to mention. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs Jenkins and Phillips, Funeral Directors, Fishguard.
MR W. J. THOMAS PEMBROKE DOCK The death occurred on Thursday, February 23rd of Mr William John Thomas, affectionately known as Bill, of Heron's Mill, Ferry Road, Pennar, Pembroke Dock. He was 74. He is survived by his wife Gillian; son and daughter-in-law Martyn and Christine; daughters and son-in-law Samantha, Julie and Antony; grandchildren Rhiannon, Sian, Rhys, Rebecca, Rachelle, Natasha, William and Bethan; sister Shirley and June, Gwyn and Tommy and many nephews and nieces. A native of Amroth, he moved to Pennar in 1981. Following his service in the RAF, he worked at the Pendine Experimental Establishment and Pembroke Power Station, where his occupation was a fireman. He retired early from the Power Station in 1986 due to an accident. His hobbies were building, fishing and his garden. His humour was well known and he was a devoted father, grandfather and brother. The funeral took place on March 2nd at Sardis chapel, Saundersfoot. Rev Donald Davies officiated, the organist was Mrs Evans of Amroth and bearers were Simon, Mike, Jeremy and Richard Rossiter and John McDonald. Principal mourners were: wife Gillian, son and daughter-in-law Martyn and Christine; daughters and son-in-law Samantha, Julie and Antony; grandchildren Rhiannon, Sian, Rhys, Rebecca, Rachelle, Natasha, William and Bethan; sister Shirley and June, Gwyn and Tommy and many nephews and nieces. Unable to attend was granddaughter Sian. Donations in lieu of flowers for ward ten, Withybush Hospital, or CCU, Withybush Hospital, to Funeral Directors W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, who also carried out the funeral arrangements.
MR A. H. S. LEWIS PEMBROKE Austin Lewis `Hal', died at his home in Upper Lamphey Road, Pembroke, on February 18th, aged 91. He was the husband of Pat, his wife of 48 years, father to Wendy and grandfather to Simon, Jamie Adam, and Kimberley. His wife and family meant everything to him. Born in Main Street, Pembroke, he took over the business of Austin Lewis in 1935 with his sister Adelaide, the business having been started in 1896 by his father. After a long and successful career, Austin Lewis Top Shop finally closed its doors in 1980. He enjoyed photography, his greenhouse and garden, the Probus Club, of which he was a founder member, and the Chrysanthemum Society, of which he enjoyed 14 years and took great pride in the flowers he grew. Family left to mourn are: Pat (wife); Wendy and Andrew (daughter and partner); Simon, Jamie Adam and Kimberley (grandchildren); Gwynneth and Roger (sister-in-law and brother-in-law); Francesca (niece); Nigel and Claire (nephew and wife); Alexander, Vaughan, Helen, Gareth and Isabelle (great nieces and nephews); Barbara, Pam, Carol, Sharman and Chris (cousins). The funeral took place on February 27th at St Mary's church, Pembroke, where Robert James, officiated. The bearers were Simon Skeels, Jamie Skeels (grandsons), Nigel Dufresnay (nephew), Alex Holding (great nephew), Terry Beynon and Graham Phillips (family friends). There were family flowers only, but donations in lieu to Neil Roberts, Bush Street, Pembroke Dock will be divided between Withybush Hospital's intensive care unit and the special care baby unit.
MR T. J. GOODCHILD HAVERFORDWEST The death of Terence John Goodchild, of Coronation Avenue, Haverfordwest, occured on February 25th at Withybush Hospital. He was aged 69. Terry and his wife Molly celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in October last year. He was a big pigeon fancier and enjoyed attending his local pigeon club. Terry was a very well-liked community person who would help anybody where and when he could. He lived life to the full and loved spending time with family and friends. Terry will be sadly missed. The funeral took place on Monday, March 6th at Prendergast church, followed by interment at Prendergast cemetery. Terry leaves to mourn wife Molly, Kathy and Phillip (daughter and son-in-law), Pat and Cliffy (daughter and son-in-law), Wendy and Larry (daughter and son-in-law), Sharon (daughter) and Denis and Jenny (son and partner), grandchildren Anna Marie, Nicola, Mark, Darren, Stephen, Andrew, Anthony, Louise and Shannon and brothers Dennis and Michael and sister Val. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Glyn Thomas and Sons.
MR G. T. W. WILLIAMS HAVERFORDWEST (formerly of Trefin) The death of Gwilym Thomas Wilfred (Wilf) Williams, of St Margaret's Close, Merlins Bridge, Haverfordwest occured in Cardiff on February 25th. He was 65. He leaves to mourn his wife Marion Joyce Williams. Wilf worked as a bricklayer with Cotton Building Contractors for many years until his retirement just six months ago. He was a regular attendee at the Bridge Meadow football ground in Haverfordwest and supported Leeds United FC. He also enjoyed gardening, reading and travelling. Family left to mourn are: Joyce Williams (wife); Edwina Hughes (mother); David and Carol Williams (son and daughter-in-law); Jane and Robert Richards (sister and brother-in-law); Martin Banner (stepson); Kevin and Claire Banner (stepson and daughter-in-law); Amanda Bevan (daughter); Tom and Libby Banner (grandchildren). A private service was held at the family home prior to a public service and cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth on March 3rd. Canon D. Evans officiated and Len Cotton gave the eulogy. The bearers were Len Cotton, Mark Price, Tim Smith and Ieuan Richards. There were immediate family flowers only. Donations for the Royal National Institute for the Blind to Carol Williams, The Spinning Wheel, 37 Ffordd-Y-Felin, Trefin. Principal mourners were: Joyce Williams, David and Carol Williams, Martin Banner, Kevin and Claire Banner, Jane and Robert Richards, Colin and Marjorie Barnsley, Geoff and Eileen Davies, Mairwen Murphy, Julian Murphy and Yolanda Cooke, James and Ceris Richards, Lorraine Davies, Andrea Haley and Sue Hamen. There were many family, friends and former work colleagues who attended who were too numerous to mention. Unable to attend were Edwina Hughes, Edwina John and Claire Raymond. Roy Folland and Son of Haverfordwest carried out the funeral arrangements.
Mr C. V. Davies Boncath Mr Cynwyd Vaughan Davies, of Llysnewydd, Boncath, died at home on Sunday February 26th, aged 91. Cynwyd Davies was from a farming background in Llangynwyd, Maesteg. He qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London, in 1938, where he had a successful academic career winning many medals and prizes. He joined J E Thomas in Cardigan in 1940 as an assistant and later became a partner in the practice which became known as Thomas, Davies, Harries and Evans. He worked in the practice in Cardigan for over 35 years and was well known throughout the area, finally retiring in 1977. Cynwyd Davies was immediately accepted by the local farming community and was very industrious and a true professional, for which he gained a great deal of respect that continued throughout his career. In 1967, he travelled all over the country to help with the foot-and-mouth epidemic. He was known for his direct advice and forthright approach to life. In 1942, he married Martha Irene, the daughter of Simon Morris, Lower Kings, Boncath, and moved to Llysgwyn before building Llysnewydd where they stayed throughout their married life. Their daughter Gillian was born in 1945, followed by Margaret in 1948. Cynwyd and Irene were married for 53 years and were devoted to each other until Irene's death in 1995. Outside his veterinary work, he was actively involved in the community in Boncath and Pembrokeshire. He served on Cemaes District Council for many years, becoming chairman after ten years. He was the chairman of Governors of Cardigan Secondary School in the year Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh attended to open the memorial gates and the school extensions. He was a member of Pembrokeshire County Council and following his keen interest in education, served on the Pembrokeshire Education Committee, and was a Governor of Preseli County Secondary School, Crymych. He was also a member of the County Welfare Committee, County Civil Defence Committee, and County Fire Service Committee, as well as many other local committees. He was also a tax commissioner. Mr Davies was a devoted family man who showed a keen interest in the career paths of his daughters Gillian and Margaret, his son in law Mark, and later his three grandsons James, Edward and Christopher, to whom he was always encouraging and most generous. He was a faithful member of Capel Colman Church, where he shared the duties of organist. The funeral took place on Friday March 3rd at Capel Colman Church, Boncath, followed by private service at Parc Gwyn, Narberth. Rev. Paul Mackness officiated, together with Canon Aled Williams of Lampeter. He was later laid to rest with his wife in the family grave in Blaenffos. During the funeral service readings were given by James and Christopher Britton and Tricia Ford. A tribute was given by Richard Thomas. Elsie Thomas played the organ. The bearers were Mark Britton, and his grandsons James, Edward, and Christopher. Principal mourners were Gillian and Mark Britton, daughter and son-in-law; Margaret White and Peter Creasy, daughter and partner; James, Edward and Christopher Britton, grandsons; David Richards, nephew, and Ann Spaven, niece. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Colin Phillips, of Jenkins and Phillips, Cardigan.
