City marks saint's day in style

DEAR EDITOR - I write regarding your article on the future of St David's Day, particularly the inference that most of the celebrations that take place revolve around schoolchildren, and especially the statements that if St David's Day was not celebrated in schools the observance of this day would disappear.

I beg to differ. Anyone who wishes to witness the contrary should have come to St Davids, the birthplace of our patron saint, during the week-long St David's Day celebrations. In addition to the ways in which the local schools celebrated, we had various concerts, a cymanfa ganu, a twmpath, a mouth-watering cawl competition, a colourful flower trail, Welsh language events, guided walks, an open-air market on the Cross Square, this list goes on! Many adults enter further into the spirit by donning their Welsh folk dress, and ladies are seen in shawls and tall hats especially on March 1st. Local restaurants and cafes also participated by offering Welsh-themed menus; one even made a special leek ice cream! All these events were particularly well supported, and, despite the weather, the city turned out in force and celebrated with great hwyl. I suggest that next year people come to St Davids for St David's Day where they will find out that the event is far from being a forgotten tradition.
