Postal staff stage second protest

From the Western Telegraph, first published Wednesday 18th Aug 2004.

A second day of petitioning outside the main post office in Haverfordwest, in protest at the plan to axe its `crown' status, saw the total number of signatures received increase to over 1,200.

A spokesman for the Communication Workers Union South West Wales said: "The vast majority of customers expressed their disbelief that the Post Office wants to sell off a crown office jewel in Pembrokeshire to a franchisee trading as Primeco.

"The comment was made repeatedly how highly the existing staff were thought of but, unfortunately, this cuts no ice with the Post Office bosses who are determined to pursue the sell-off. Further comments were made about parking problems and why the town should need yet another convenience store."

Further petitions are in place with many business premises within the town.

Union representatives have also met with the town councillors and local business people to put forward the case for the retention of main office status.

Plans are now under way for a public meeting on September 8th at the Picton Centre at 7pm.

"It is hoped local dignitaries, Post Office managers and union officials will be in attendance for a question and answer session with customers and residents. The union will be hoping for a large attendance to put over the argument that this move is most definitely not in the interest of the town," said the spokesman.
